Malachi Fields emerging as Notre Dame’s new offensive weapon

SOUTH BEND, Ind. --  Notre Dame may be 0-2 to start the season, but there’s a bright spot on offense. The Irish appear to have found the passing-game threat they’ve been missing.

Redshirt freshman quarterback C.J. Carr has thrown for 5 yards and three touchdowns in two games, showing early signs of promise. For the first time in a while, he has a true outside target in former Virginia transfer Malachi Fields.

Fields, standing 6-foot-4 and 222 pounds, brings size and strength to the boundary. Through two games, he has recorded eight receptions for 125 yards, averaging 15.6 yards per catch. His strong showing against Texas A&M’s top corner highlighted his ability to compete in one-on-one matchups and make tough plays through contact.

Coaches believe Fields’ presence adds an important dimension to the offense and creates opportunities for other weapons like Jaden Greathouse, Will Pauling, and tight end Eli Raridon. The added balance gives Notre Dame a more explosive passing game than in recent seasons.

Despite ongoing defensive struggles, Fields’ emergence offers optimism that the Irish offense can help stabilize the season and keep fans engaged moving forward.
