Man accused of domestic battery, said he was 'ready' to go to jail

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. - A man was arrested for domestic battery after he allegedly choked a woman and punched her numerous times, according to the probable cause affidavit.

Arthur Von Witt Jr., 31, was arrested on the following charges:

  • Strangulation
  • Domestic battery
  • Domestic battery committed in the presence of a child less than 16 years old
  • Domestic battery resulting in serious bodily injury
  • Intimidation
  • Domestic battery with a prior conviction

On October 20, officers with the South Bend Police Department were called to a home for a "domestic assault taking place," reports said.

At the scene, officers found the woman and four juveniles leaving the residence.

The victim's face was swollen, bleeding, and had numerous cuts on it.

She told officers she and her husband, identified as Witt, were going through a divorce and Witt no longer lives at the home.

That day, Witt had contacted her frequently, demanding to speak with her, the victim said.

Fearing that Witt would get violent, the victim refused to speak with him.

That evening, she told her children to lock the doors out of fear that Witt would come over.

Before one of the doors could be locked, Witt entered and said, "I will kill you," according to reports.

The victim yelled for the children to go upstairs and call the police.

Witt then punched the victim in the face repeatedly before putting his hands and arms around her neck and choking her until she passed out, police said.

When the victim woke up, Witt allegedly continued to punch her.

He then said he was "done," and went to lie down.

The victim and the children left the residence.

When officers went inside the home, Witt allegedly told them he was "ready" to go to jail.

Witt was convicted of domestic battery in April of 2016.

He is being held on a $10,000 cash bond.

Witt is due in court on November 9.
