Man shot and killed in hail of gunfire, police searching for gunmen

 SOUTH BEND, Ind. --  SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- A 31-year-old man was shot and killed near the corner of Johnson and Lathrop Streets in South Bend.



Police say officers responded to a call of multiple shots fired in the area just before 8 p.m. Friday night. When police arrived they found a black sedan crashed into a nearby telephone pole with several bullet holes in the hood and front windshield of the car.  


A short distance away, police found a man lying on the ground shot to death. Police say the victim had been shot several times. Neighbors say they heard close to 20 shots fired, including a short pause before the gunshots continued.


Investigators say a woman, the driver of the black car, witnessed the shooting. The woman was not shot, but may have sustain minor injuries from the car crash.


Police are not releasing the name of the victim until the family have been notified.investigators do believe the man was from the Hammond area.
