Marcus Freeman’s reaction to Pitt win and key updates ahead of Syracuse
SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The Fighting Irish are back home in South Bend after a big Top-25 win over Pitt, and head coach Marcus Freeman had plenty to say about where the team stands heading into Senior Day against Syracuse.
Freeman said he was proud of his team, but after watching the film, he pointed out one thing clearly: the late touchdown Pitt scored was on Notre Dame. No one can point the finger at Pitt’s head coach, Pat Narduzzi, for wanting to put points on the scoreboard — the Irish simply shouldn’t have allowed it.
On special teams, Freeman talked about the group's increased improvement. He felt the kickoff return unit was strong, but said the group still needs to clean up explosive returns and be more precise in those moments.
Syracuse may be 3–7, but they are coming off a bye week and play with a lot of fight. Plus, Notre Dame has dominated Senior Day the last three years, winning each game by more than 21 points. This year, they enter as 35.5-point favorites.
As for injury updates, Freeman liked what he saw from cornerback Christian Gray, who returned healthy after missing three weeks. He added that defensive lineman Gabriel Rubio, dealing with an elbow injury, would be ready for the playoffs if the Irish qualify.
On the other hand, wide receiver Jaden Greathouse is taking longer than expected to recover and the staff are not expecting to throw him on the field if it’s not necessary.
When asked about his current relationship with former quarterback Steve Angeli, Freeman shared a sweet personal note, saying he still cares for him “like one of his own.” He’s hoping Angeli will make the trip to South Bend so he can give him a big hug and catch up in person.
Notre Dame continues prep for Syracuse with kick-off set for Saturday at 3:30pm in Notre Dame Stadium.
