DOWAGIAC, Mich. -- The Dowagiac Fire Department reports crews responded to a multi-story house fire just after midnight Monday in the 300 block of W. Division Street.

Dispatch was informed there was heavy smoke and flames visibly coming from the first and second floor of the home.

Wayne Township Fire Department also responded to the scene for automatic aid.

Crews on scene confirmed fire with heavy smoke throughout the home and began attacking the interior fire on both floors.

The report states smoke and fire conditions led to the need for even more crews. Members of the Pokagon Fire Department, Indian Lake Fire Department, and Sister Lakes Fire Department arrived to assist.

Fire officials say the fire was under control by 2 a.m., but crews remained on scene until 3:30 a.m. to complete salvage and overhaul operations.

Residents of the duplex home have been displaced, and fire officials say the home suffered moderate fire damage.

The family told officials the fire began in a first-floor bedroom before spreading quickly.

Fire officials say the cause of the fire appears accidental and is not considered suspicious.

The home did have smoke alarms, and fire crews verified the alarms activated and alerted the occupants.

No injuries have been reported.
