ND breaks ground on environment research center

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The University of Notre Dame broke ground on its cutting-edge environment research center on Friday.

In February, ABC57 got a look at the design for the project.

The new building will be called the Notre Dame Linked Experimental Eco-System Facility.

Notre Dame has partnered with St. Patrick's County Park for the project.

The new center will allow students to study the relationships between land, water, and wetlands.

"As far as anyone knows, this will be the only research facility for acquatic study where a stream and a pond and a wetland are all linked," said Evie Kirkwood, Director of the St. Joseph County Parks.

The university leased 28-acres of undeveloped park land for the center.
