NILES, Mi. – Libraries have always been a source of information.
It’s more than just checking out books and browsing the web with free computer access.
One local library in Michiana is taking the traditional library experience to another level.
Typically you will find a large collection of books, movies, magazines, and audiobooks at the library, and although, you can still find those items at the Niles District Library, your library card can allow you to check out so much more.
It is a hidden gem located in the basement of the Niles-District Library, and it is called the “Library of Things” with two rows of over 200 everyday items you can check out and take home for a week.
The “Library of Things” is divided into nine sections ranging from home improvement, games, and kitchen appliances.
You can find items like a metal detector, board games, puzzles, kitchen appliances like pots and pans, science kits, and a piano keyboard.
Sarah Skinner, the Adult Services Team Leader at the Niles-District Library said the idea behind the unique collection came as a way for community members to try an item out before buying it in stores.
When people get excited about learning that it’s here and that they can take the things home,” Skinner said.
You can check out a list of items from their collection online here, or inside the library near the front desk is a catalog.
