Notre Dame researchers find new class of antibiotics

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Researchers at the University of Notre Dame published a study about their discovery of a new class of antibiotics that could treat antibiotic-resistant infections, like MRSA.



MRSA can start out looking like a spider bite, but if not properly treated, can become swollen and infected-looking.



MRSA is a challenge for health care providers because it is drug resistant.



The discovery by Notre Dame researchers could make a big difference in the treatment of MRSA.



"It is a new class of antibiotics, it is a whole different way to treat MRSA infections and the second is it will be available by mouth which is very helpful and many of those patients can be treated as an outpatient," said Dr. Asad Ansari who treats pediatric infectious diseases.
