NOW: People in Elkhart County are facing the aftermath of Thursday night’s storm

ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. — Power lines knocked down and tree branches snapped, that's what many residents across Elkhart are seeing from last night's storm.

On Friday, many residents were seen cleaning up branches while trying to avoid downed power lines. Marselo Acosta was stuck driving in Thursday night's storm, seeing damaged houses and even moving some trees from the roadway. Acosta said he and his car made it home in one piece. His brother-in-law was not so lucky.

"He was trying to leave his house really quick and the storm was in his path. The car ended up getting damaged by a tree snapping off and destroying the whole front end of his car," said Acosta.

Neighbors weren't the only ones cleaning up. Chad Rinehart, who works with Eager Beaver Tree Service, spent most of his day taking customer's calls.

"With the storm that came through last night, we went ahead and I hit several houses before this one, removing them from the structure so the customer can tarp it up so there’s no rain damage going into the houses. We’re just basically going from one house to the other to another with the worst damage being priority," Rinehart explained.

While Rinehart worked to remove trees from homes, Indiana Michigan Power worked all day to restore power back into many homes. Elkhart County faced more than 30,000 power outages.

"If you are out and about, make sure to stay away from those wires. You, a member of the public, will not know if they are live or not. Just be aware of the situation you are in and be mindful of the area. Like I said, you the ground is very wet. With the high winds we are still going to see some fallen trees, so let's just be mindful of the area we are in," said Communication Specialist, Demetrious Lewis.

Indiana Michigan Power shared power should be restored to areas like Muncie and Fort Wayne by 11 p.m., however, they are still working on the South Bend and Elkhart areas.
