SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- When you mix bounce houses and face paint with police cruisers and SWAT trucks, you're sure to have a good time.

Across the country, police departments are hosting the communities they serve with the goal of bridging the gap between officers and neighbors, with the long-term goals of crime prevention and recruiting.

“The one thing that we strive for is to get that trust of the community,” says Jarveair Bourn, a South Bend Police officer.

Police departments across Michiana celebrated National Night Out Tuesday, where officers can take a break from patrolling the streets and build a relationship with the citizens they serve.

“When we do go to calls or they need us for something, they feel a little more comfortable,” explaind Lieutenant Bruce Faltynski, who directs Community Relations at the Mishawaka Police Department.

The family-friendly atmosphere and camaraderie of a night out allows folks to be comfortable while interacting with their local law enforcement.

“It’s a very celebratory, joyous event. Sometimes when we interact with people, it’s not always the best situation,” Lt. Faltynski admitted.

“In a non-stressful environment to actually have a conversation with officers,” said Bourn.

It also showcases the numerous opportunities that fall into each department, which officers say helps with recruiting; from K-9, to SWAT, to school resource officers.

“We have a whole range of officers that were able to share their experience and tell them all the different programs we have for Mishawaka,” shared Faltynski.

The connection between local officers and citizens also helps to prevent further crime, they hope the community will be more willing to speak up about crime if they trust that their officers will take care of the issue.

“As a citizen, if you’re concerned with some of the safety that’s happening and crimes that are occurring in your neighborhood, reach out,” Faltynski assured.

South Bend Police are not quite done with the fun yet, they're hosting a Back-To-School Cookout next Friday to get our youth in the right frame of mind before they hit the books again this month.
