South Bend Police, CMHU on scene of shooting on Elwood

SOUTH BEND, Ind. --A South Bend Police officer shot a man who attacked him while responding to a call in the 1300 block of Elwood Tuesday evening.

Officers were called to the area to investigate reports of an unwanted person.

The first officer arrived on scene just before 6 p.m. and came in contact with a man.

Witnesses told police, the unwanted person assaulted the officer and a confrontation ensued.

The officer shot the unwanted person during the confrontation.

The man was transported to the hospital and he is in critical condition.

Police said the officer was also injured. He was taken to the hospital, treated and released.

The County Metro Homicide Unit has taken over the investigation.

In a statement from Mayor Pete Buttigieg’s Office, "The Mayor is aware of the situation and is receiving updates from law enforcement. As with all officer-involved shootings, the case is being handled by the Metro Homicide Unit."
