One person dead, another in the hospital after shooting and crash on Brookfield Street
ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. – The St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit is investigating a shooting and crash happening on the 700 block of N. Brookfield Street that has left one person dead, another injured, according to Steve Richmond, Assistant Commander of CMHU.
Two cars were involved in the shooting, according to Richmond. One of the cars involved in the shooting struck a parked car on the street and flipped over.
The driver of that car has died. He has been identified as Benjamin Harris Jr., a 19-year-old, resident of South Bend, CMHU said. Harris suffered gunshot wounds, CMHU said, Paramedics and officers provided Harris with live saving measures, but he was pronounced dead at the hospital. His family has been notified.
The passenger has been transported to the hospital. He has been identified as Tyreese Malone, a 21-year-old male from Mishawaka. He was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries related to the traffic accident.
The other car involved in the shooting sped off from the scene. Police are currently trying to identify this car. They believe it is a dark color sedan, CMHU said.
The call came in just before 4:02 am.
This scene is still active. Crews have put up tape just before 5:20 am, blocking off a section of the road.
