Suspect allegedly threatens victim with axe, steals truck, falls from tree, taken to jail

KOSCIUSKO COUNTY, Ind. -- The Indiana State Police Bremen Post reports troopers responded to the 9000 block of N S.R. 13 on the evening of Aug. 9 to assist the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office in locating a suspect who fled from what was described as a chaotic scene.
Police were informed that the suspect, 39-year-old Michael Baker of Cromwell, Ind., had allegedly threatened someone with an axe before stealing a Ford pickup truck and ramming into another vehicle before fleeing.
Troopers arrived on scene to find tracks in the grass leading to a nearby wooded area.
While deputies were speaking to the victim, troopers along with another deputy followed the tracks into the woods where they found the pickup truck abandoned around 11 p.m.
A trooper with their K9 unit then began to track Baker.
Authorities say about a half hour later, they heard yells for help coming from deeper in the woods.
Law enforcement yelled out for Baker but heard no response.
During a grid search of the area, authorities found Baker 20 feet up in a tree just after midnight.
Police say Baker had taken his T-shirt and tied it in a loop around his neck and the tree to help him stay in the tree.
Troopers talked Baker into coming down, but he fell while making an attempt.
He became caught in branches still 10 feet up before eventually falling to the ground.
Baker was taken into custody, at which point medic on scene evaluated him before being taken to Kosciusko County Jail for charges related to the investigation by the KCSO.
