A Toll Road maintenance worker was struck and killed by a vehicle on the Indiana Toll Road near Fir Road Thursday afternoon, according to Indiana State Police.
Around 1:45 p.m., the Indiana Toll Road Concession Co. employee parked his maintenance truck on the side of the road with his emergency lights activated and began sweeping debris from the right shoulder in front of his truck.
An SUV also in the eastbound lanes side swiped the maintenance truck, hit the worker and drove off the road. The SUV overturned and came to a rest in a ditch on the side of the road.
The driver of the SUV and his passenger were transported to the hospital with minor injuries.
The worker was pronounced dead at the scene.
61-year-old Ronald Smith of Edwardsburg has been identified as the maintenance worker who was struck and killed while working on the side of the Indiana Toll Road.
Police have also identified 70-year-old Charles Bellows as the driver of the Toyota and 69-year-old Deborah Bellows as the passenger in that vehicle.
Drugs and alcohol are not believed to be a factor in this case.
