Two suspects arrested on drug, firearm charges after traffic stop on US 20

LAPORTE COUNTY, Ind.—Two suspects were arrested on drug and firearm charges on October 7, according to the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office.

On October 7, around 8:27 p.m., a deputy traveling west on U.S. 20 in the 1000 west block saw a vehicle ahead of him with an equipment violation.

The deputy ran a check and learned that the car’s license plate was supposed to be on a different car.

A traffic stop was performed in the 1800 west block of U.S. 20.

The driver, identified as Africa D. S. Gunn, 43, of South Bend, was found to be wanted by the sheriff’s office.

Other deputies arrived to assist and deployed K-9 Bosco to perform a free air sniff around the outside of the car.

Bosco gave a positive alert and after a search of the vehicle, a loaded 9mm pistol and illegal drugs were located by police, reports said.

Gunn was arrested and booked into the LaPorte County Jail on suspicion of being a serious violent felon in possession of a firearm, possession of cocaine, possession of marijuana and on a failure to appear warrant, police said.

The car’s passenger, Fred Jenkins III, 36, also of South Bend, was also arrested and booked into the LaPorte County Jail on suspicion of being a serious violent felon in possession of a firearm, possession of cocaine and possession of marijuana.
