U.S. Coast Guard plows through ice on Lake Superior

The U.S. Coast Guard Sector of Sault Sainte Marie plowed through the ice sheets that have developed in Lake Superior.

Monday, Operation Taconite commenced, breaking up the ice in the St. Marys River which drains Lake Superior into Lake Huron.

The Coast Guard says this operation is to ensure vessels can make it to commercial ports without getting stuck in the ice.

The operation will also take place in the Straits of Mackinac and Lake Michigan.
