Welfare check leads to officer threatened with handgun, suspect later arrested

MISHAWAKA, Ind. -- Shortly after 4 a.m. Friday morning, officers from the Mishawaka Police department responded to a welfare check request on Tremont Drive.

As an officer approached the house, the 50-year-old resident exited the house with a handgun. He raised it and pointed it at the officer, who was able to retreat and take cover. The male threatened the officer before retreating back into the house.

A short time later, the male exited the house again and sat on the front porch. He was later taken into custody without incident. He was transported to the St. Joseph County Jail, his initial charges being intimidation and pointing a firearm.
