Woman charged with OWI, battery of deputy following traffic stop
Laquintae Taborn LA PORTE COUNTY, Ind. -- The La Porte County Sheriff's Office reports a woman was arrested on several charges following a traffic stop in the 1300 block of Pine Lake Avenue Tuesday night.
Authorities say a deputy was traveling north on in the 2000-north block of US 35 around 8:49 p.m., when he observed a gray Tesla traveling south with one working headlight.
The report states once the deputy was behind the Tesla, it was found to have an expired registration sticker. The deputy noted the vehicle also drove left of center.
The deputy then pulled the Tesla over on Pine Lake Avenue. The driver was identified as 43-year-old Laquintae Taborn of La Porte.
The deputy then learned Taborn was a suspect in an incident earlier Tuesday, and probable cause existed for her arrest. The report states when Taborn was told to exit the Tesla and taken into custody, she became loud and argumentative.
Authorities say this behavior continued at which point the deputy found probable cause she may be impaired.
Taborn was taken to the La Porte County Jail before being taken to the hospital for medical clearance.
According to the report, once in the emergency exam room, Taborn refused to comply and repeatedly got up from the bed and began walking around.
After being given instructions, authorities say she ran out of the exam room and into another where she attempted to hide behind a privacy curtain.
Documents state when the deputy approached Taborn to take her back to the correct exam room, she began to resist.
Once back in the original exam room on the bed, the report states Taborn raised both legs before kicking the deputy in the chest before kicking him in the head.
Authorities say Taborn continued to resist until additional help arrived. She was medically cleared and taken back to jail.
Taborn has been charged with Battery of a Public Safety Official, a Level 6 Felony, Resisting Law Enforcement, a Class A Misdemeanor, OWI – Prior Conviction, a Level 6 Felony, OWI – Endangerment, a Class A Misdemeanor, and OWI – Per Se, a Class C Misdemeanor.
Taborn remains in jail as she's not eligible for bond.
