Woman faces felony charges after allegedly striking boyfriend with pick-up truck
Elkhart County Jail: Tara Shell NEW PARIS, Ind. -- A 34-year-old New Paris woman is facing felony charges after allegedly striking her boyfriend with her pick-up truck before fleeing in September 2025.
The suspect, Tara Shell, is charged with Domestic Battery by Means of a Deadly Weapon, a Level 5 Felony, and Leaving the Scene of an Accident with Moderate or Serious Bodily Injury, a Level 6 Felony.
Shell's initial hearing is scheduled for June 23.
Court documents from Elkhart County reveal deputies with the Elkhart County Sheriff's Office responded to a home in the 19000 block of Tarman Road of New Paris around 11:44 p.m., on Sept. 13, 2025, for a crash.
Upon arrival, the victim told authorities his girlfriend, Shell, had hit him with her Ford F-150 before driving away.
The victim told investigators he and Shell were drinking heavily throughout the day, before they got into an argument that evening.
The victim said Shell ran outside to her truck, so he stood in front of the truck to stop her from leaving. He told deputies he was concerned for her safety, due to her level of intoxication.
The victim said that's when she backed up against the garage before accelerating at him.
The victim stated he only remembered hearing the crunch of the grill before awaking on the ground in the yard.
A responding deputy noted an approximate two-inch laceration on the victim's right elbow covered in dry blood. The victim also complained of "really bad" pain in his lower back.
Three witnesses on scene corroborated the victim's claims, with one stating Shell's teen son was next to the victim when the incident occurred.
