Afternoon shooting leaves one injured in Michigan City, police search for suspect
ABC 57 MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. -- The Michigan City Police Department is reporting one person was injured in a Friday afternoon shooting and are continuing the search for the suspect or suspects in the case.
Police say the officers responded to the 400 black of Chicago Street around 3:17 p.m., Friday, after receiving a gunshot detection notification in the area.
The report states La Porte Regional Dispatch then received a call about a person discharging a fully automatic firearm at the exact location officers responded to.
Dispatch was also informed of a person suffering from a gunshot wound in the 900 block of West 8th Street.
Police on Chicago Street noted there were several spent shell casings at the scene and learned the suspect had left the scene before they arrived.
The victim, a 20-year-old man, was found to be suffering from a gunshot wound to his left leg.
The injury was deemed non-life-threatening, and the victim was taken to Franciscan Health hospital in Michigan City for medical treatment.
Detectives responded to the scene to assist officers. Investigators say they've collected multiple pieces of evidence, interviewed witnesses, and reviewed video surveillance.
Police are continuing to interview witnesses.
Authorities say the preliminary investigation shows this shooting wasn't random and there's no known threat to the community at this time.
