Candidate forum for 38th State House District taking place in St. Joseph

ST. JOSEPH, Mich. -- The Southwest Michigan Regional Chamber is partnering with News/Talk/Sports 94.9 WSJM to bring a candidate forum to St. Joseph on July 7.

It will take place at the Shadowland Ballroom from 6 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. and will bring together the five candidates who have filed to represent the 38th House District.

The new district is a product of Michigan’s Independent Redistricting Commission and stretches nearly 80 miles across parts of Berrien, Van Buren, and Allegan Counties.

The five candidates are Joey Andrews (D) of St. Joseph, Annie Brown (D) and Kevin Whiteford (R) of South Haven, Troy Rolling (R) of Benton Harbor, and George Lucas (R) of Harbert.

Without an incumbent running for re-election, it is the region’s only open seat and is expected to be one of the most competitive primary and general elections on either side of the aisle this cycle.

“As the voice for business in the region, we have a responsibility to communicate where those seeking public office stand on matters important to our members and our community,” said Regional Chamber President and CEO Arthur Havlicek.  “Michigan’s new legislative districts present several opportunities to engage in this important work, none more high-profile than the competitive 38th House District race.”

The general public is welcome to attend the event in-person, and for those unable to attend, News/Talk/Sports 94.9 WSJM will stream the forum live on-the-air and via Facebook Live.

In addition, there will be an informal networking hour following the forum, from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., where the public is invited to stay and interact with the candidates directly.
