UPDATE: Suspect identified, charged after high-speed chase on Portage Friday
UPDATE ON AUG. 12, 2024: The St. Joseph County Prosecutor's Office has released the name of the suspect involved in Friday's high-speed chase on Portage Avenue.
Authorities say 35-year-old Douglas Lee Alwine III had warrants for his arrest and a traffic stop was attempted when a patrolling officer spotted him driving on Portage Avenue Friday afternoon.
VIDEO: Dashcam video shows the moment the chase turned into a crash
Court documents state that Alwine made eye contact with the officer behind him through his mirror before speeding away, reaching speeds over 100 miles per hour.
When he approached the intersection of Portage and Adams, he crashed his Cadillac Escalade into two other vehicles, before leaving his own vehicle and running into the woods on foot.
A K-9 officer eventually caught up with Alwine and he was taken into custody.
During the investigation, officers found a bag that appeared to have been recently placed there. The bag contained 2.02 pounds of methamphetamine, well over the 28-gram limit that elevates the charge from possession to dealing.
In total, Alwine was charged with felony Possession of Methamphetamine, Dealing in Methamphetamine, and Resisting Law Enforcement, along with misdemeanor Resisting Law Enforcement.
His initial bail hearing was Aug. 12 at 1 p.m.
