July weather recap

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- July has ended, and another month of summer is over, but how did July stack up to average?

July was characterized by lots of rain, flooding, and some severe weather.

The most notable events were the heavy rains from tropical remnants of Beryl and the derecho event about a week later.

Beryl brought very heavy rainfall with some reports of 8 inches of rain. The short duration of the rainfall caused flooding across the area and river rises.

The derecho event a week later caused straight-line wind damage and three confirmed tornadoes across Michiana.

The multiple storms we saw this past month made rainfall amounts shoot up. South Bend saw just over 4.5 inches of rain during July.

South Bend was almost an inch above average for rainfall for the month.

Temperature wise, things were just about average. South Bend was only 0.1 degree warmer than normal. If July 31st was not as warm as it was, the month actually would have been cooler than average.

We frequently had cooler than average weather during the month of July here in Michiana. Largely due to the rain and clouds that oftentimes moved through.

The most interesting aspect of the month was that South Bend never hit 90 degrees. July is climatologically the hottest month of the year, and we never hit 90 once.

The last time that happened was in 2017! South Bend usually averages six 90-degree days during July, so we were very shy of that number.
