Man charged after allegedly sexually assaulting 12-year-old in park

Carlos Gomez

ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. -- Court documents from Elkhart County reveal 42-year-old Carlos Gomez has been arrested on two counts of Child Molesting, Level 1 Felonies, following an incident at Langle Park the evening of Sept. 16, 2024.

Gomez is alleged to have sexually assaulted a 12-year-old runaway at the park.

Investigators found male DNA on the victim, which was later linked to Gomez in October, leading to his arrest on Monday.

No court date has been set for Gomez at this time.

The Elkhart Police Department reports a call came in on Sept. 16, 2024, regarding the assault of the 12-year-old in the 600 block of Laurel Street.

The victim was taken to a local hospital before being taken to St. Joseph Regional Medical Center for a Sexual Assault Nurse Examination.

Medical staff stated there were abrasions to the victim's genitals and a test revealed the victim tested positive for a sexually transmitted infection.

Unknown male DNA was also located on the victim.

The male DNA profile was entered into the Combined DNA Index System on Sept. 10, which found it to correspond with Gomez on Oct. 21.

Gomez had been entered into CODIS, due to a prior Felony Theft conviction in Elkhart County, police say.

Police say when Gomez was later interviewed, he admitted to taking his pants off and touching the victim who he thought was 15 to 16 years old.

The victim told police she informed Gomez she was 12.
