NOW: Redskins look to fill big shoes in running backs’ room

KNOX, Ind. -- Back to the gridiron now, where this week's Under the Lights game of the week is Knox and North Judson.

These two teams have high expectations this year, but for the Redskins, they've got some big shoes to fill.

Knox head coach Russ Radtke is entering his seventh season at the helm for the Redskins, so he’s not unfamiliar with the struggle of losing guys to graduation.

But this year is a little different.

"I checked the records to make sure he wasn't going to come back for a fifth year, he doesn't get to," said Radtke.

How do you replace a player like former Knox superstar Myles McLaughlin, who won Indiana's Mr. Football award, and finished his high school career as the state's career rushing and scoring leader?

Answer - you don't, because that would be impossible.

But coach Radtke and the Redskins aren't replacing, they're reloading.

"We've got three or four guys, there's not one guy to replace anybody, as good as he was. We've got two or three different running backs; we've got other people that can carry the ball. One or two of them might have speed, the other ones might be the big guys up inside that pound for five or six yards if we're not getting that wide open opening," said Radtke.

One of those guys tasked with filling the hole left behind by McLaughlin is Ashton Walker.

Walker will also play a big part in a defensive unit that saw plenty of success last season, but similar to the offense, has to replace several members lost to graduation.

"It's pretty much just all a bunch of young guys, it's hard to get them down all at once, but we're starting to figure it out and we just have to go out there and do what we know we can do," said Walker, senior quarterback, running back, and defensive back.

If this feels like a little bit of deja vu, perhaps it should.

North Judson, who runs a triple option offense, faces Knox, who also runs a triple option offense, to start the season for both teams.

It's the third year in a row these two rivals will begin their campaign with a showdown against one another.

"All the boys on this team want to beat Judson, that's just one of those rival games that we don't want to lose and we're going to do everything we can to beat Judson, and that's why we've been putting in the work all week, coming in at 7 in the morning on Saturdays," said Walker.

The Redskins and Blue Jays will kick off at 8 p.m. at Liberty Field in North Judson.
