Weather recap for July

NOW: Weather recap for July

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- It’s been a hot, wet end to the month of July, but was the entire month this way?

It has been hot here in Michiana, with temperatures consistently soaring into the 90s over the past couple of days, making it a hot end to a hot month.

Most days in July had daytime highs reach above average temperatures, with eight days over 90 degrees. We may have reached our hottest day this year on Thursday, July 24, with a high of 96 degrees in South Bend, but of course we still have August.

Speaking of, similar to this month, August is likely going to be just slightly hotter than average overall, with average temperatures finally starting to fall as we get a little closer to the end of the month and likely starting on a thankfully cool note.

But above average temperatures mean that the air can hold more moisture.

Most of the precipitation we saw was in the back half of July but overall, it was feast or famine for most of Michiana. The spotty pop-up thunderstorms that we saw throughout the month brought intense rainfall to some areas.

However, South Bend itself will likely be ending below average on rainfall.

But again, not all of Michiana was bone dry. The further north you got, the drier it was, with some areas in Berrien County reportedly not even getting an inch of precipitation.

The real winners this month were between US 20 and US 30, with a reported 10 inches falling ENE of Walkerton, east central La Porte County seeing rainfall totals above seven inches.

Just a couple miles away from the recording site that saw the highest rainfall totals, saw close to 7.4 inches, just showing you how these storms that we’ve seen to end the month were truly sporadic.
